Wetland Park Destination

With support from the Metro Denver Nature Alliance’s 2025 Demonstration Project Grant, the Sand Creek Regional Greenway Partnership (SCRGP) has launched Many Destinations – Wetland Park, the first phase of a larger effort to reduce barriers for enjoying the Sand Creek Regional Greenway. This project is transforming Commerce City Wetland Park area into a more welcoming, vibrant destination through the installation of inclusive swings, boulder seating, native plantings, a mural on the existing loop path around the wetland, and shade designed to bring people and nature together.

Enhancing Nature and Strengthening Connection

The Wetland Park Destination sits within a unique stretch of the Greenway that supports critical wildlife habitats despite being bordered by highways and industrial areas. By improving native vegetation and restoring natural features, the project enhances the ecological health of this important urban corridor while offering new spaces for family time, recreation, and reflection.

Because the Greenway spans multiple municipalities, this work also strengthens regional collaboration, aligning city and county partners to create a more cohesive and accessible green space network across Denver’s northeast communities.

Designed With and For the Community

Every element of the Wetland Park Destination was shaped through a seven-month community engagement process, during which residents shared their visions for what would make the Greenway feel more inviting, safe, and reflective of their neighborhood identity.

The resulting design, which features art, play, and natural restoration, shows how public spaces can evolve through community leadership and cross-sector partnership. As part of a larger, ongoing initiative, the Sand Creek Regional Greenway Partnership's Many Destinations initiative lays the groundwork for future enhancements that will continue to turn an urban creek, trail, and wildlife corridor surrounded by industry into a space for connection, beauty, and belonging.

The Wetland Park Destination is fully funded thanks to the generous support of Great Outdoors Colorado, Adams County Open Space, The Colorado Health Foundation, and Metro Denver Nature Alliance. The conceptual design is complete, led by SCRGP Community Ambassadors, Flow Design Collaborative, and Flour Design Studio, is complete. Construction drawings and permitting with the City of Commerce City are currently underway.
