Creating a Collaborative Regional Vision for People and Nature

A Regional Vision for a Thriving Future

The Metro Denver region is growing rapidly, and with it comes the challenge of balancing conservation, recreation, and equitable access to nature. To address this, Metro DNA is partnering with the Keystone Policy Center to develop a Regional Vision for People and Nature—a shared framework guiding conservation and environmental equity efforts across the seven-county metro area.

This initiative brings together local governments, Indigenous communities, nonprofits, and community members to ensure that everyone has access to green spaces, while also protecting biodiversity, enhancing climate resilience, and fostering sustainable growth.

Why This Matters

Building a Unified Vision for People and Nature

Urbanization, climate change, and environmental disparities threaten both ecosystems and communities. Access to nature is not equal across Metro Denver, and many communities lack nearby green spaces or safe ways to enjoy the outdoors. At the same time, conservation efforts remain fragmented across jurisdictions.

A Regional Vision unites these efforts, aligning priorities to ensure:

  • Nature remains accessible and protected for future generations

  • Conservation and recreation planning reflects community values

  • Climate adaptation strategies integrate natural solutions

  • Metro DNA’s partners can collaborate effectively across the region

Over the next two years, Keystone Policy Center will lead a collaborative planning process that integrates scientific research, community engagement, and strategic visioning to shape a shared Regional Vision for People and Nature. Building on Metro DNA’s Regional Conservation Assessment and Regional Equity Assessment, this initiative will ensure that decision-making is guided by both ecological data and lived experiences. Through interviews, focus groups, surveys, and interactive workshops, diverse voices—including local land managers, Indigenous leaders, outdoor recreation groups, policymakers, and environmental justice advocates—will help shape a vision that is inclusive, actionable, and aligned with community needs.

As Metro Denver grows and changes, urbanization, climate shifts, and environmental disparities continue to impact both ecosystems and communities. Many neighborhoods lack accessible green spaces, while conservation efforts remain fragmented across jurisdictions. A unified Regional Vision will bridge these gaps, ensuring that nature remains protected, conservation and recreation planning reflect community priorities, and climate adaptation strategies incorporate natural solutions. By fostering collaboration and shared action, Metro DNA and its partners can create a more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive future where both people and nature thrive.

Regional Vision Report Announcement

Today, we're excited to share our Regional Vision for People and Nature— a shared roadmap to guide community priorities and investments in the outdoors.

The Vision describes current context and conditions; regional values and themes; and desired future conditions for the region. It will serve as a framework for building and investing in a more connected, inclusive and sustainable future for people and nature in Metro Denver.

“Metro DNA’s Regional Vision for People and Nature establishes a unifying foundation that brings together a broad and diverse coalition committed to stewarding the natural resources that make the Denver area so special,” said Chris Hawkins, Cities Program Director for The Nature Conservancy in Colorado, and Executive Committee member of Metro DNA. “Every person deserves access to nature – and nature depends on all of us to thrive.” With support from Colorado Parks and Wildlife Regional Partnership Initiative funding, and Keystone Policy Center leading the process, the Vision builds upon previous work conducted by Metro DNA, including the Regional Conservation Assessment, Regional Equity Assessment, and investment in Regional Demonstration Projects.

The Vision lifts up local voices, values, and ideas that reflect Metro Denver’s diverse needs and aspirations.

Project Timeline

The development of the Regional Vision follows a structured, community-driven approach:

  • 2024 – Early 2025: Research & Stakeholder Engagement
Keystone will conduct a comprehensive review of existing conservation and equity initiatives while meeting with Metro DNA partners, policymakers, and community organizations to gather insights.

  • Mid-2025: Community Outreach & Vision Development
Through public meetings, surveys, and focus groups, we’ll co-create a vision that defines regional priorities, conservation strategies, and policy recommendations.

  • Late 2025 – Early 2026: Finalizing the Regional Vision
The final plan will include a clear roadmap for implementation, with defined actions, milestones, and strategies for funding and long-term impact.

Regional Vision for People and Nature: Community Engagement Report (2025)

This Community Engagement Report synthesizes findings from a six-month community engagement process to inform Metro DNA’s Regional Vision for People and Nature. Keystone Policy Center was contracted by Metro DNA to lead an 18-month process to develop a Regional Vision for the seven-county Metro Denver region. The process is divided into three main phases which includes background research, community outreach and engagement, and developing the Regional Vision. This report provides an overview of Keystone’s findings from the second phase of work on community outreach and engagement.

Regional Vision for People and Nature: Background Research Report (2024)

This comprehensive report, prepared by the Keystone Policy Center for the Metro Denver Nature Alliance, lays the groundwork for a shared Regional Vision that prioritizes equitable access to nature, environmental justice, and habitat connectivity in the seven-county Denver metro area. It highlights key findings from regional conservation and equity assessments, community input, and gaps in planning—offering strategic recommendations to guide future conservation and investment efforts across the region.
